Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), sometimes referred to as Cot Death, is a worldwide issue. Infants from birth to one year old can experience harmful irregular breathing or cease breathing completely. In many cases, there is no medical explanation.
In New Zealand, Ministry of Health Statistics show that the incidence of SIDS is still between 1.5 and 2 per 1000 live births, or a total of 60-80 deaths per year. This rate is the second highest in the OECD group of countries after France.

International and New Zealand studies since 1991 have lead to a number of recommendations by medical authorities to help reduce the incidence of SIDS including:

  1. Lie baby on his/her back to sleep
  2. Do not overheat baby's environment
  3. Do not smoke in baby's environment
  4. If possible, avoid bed sharing

Monitors such as Babysense are not foolproof and do not replace any of these measures or the responsibility of parents/caregivers to observe baby for signs of illness. However Babysense can complement normal care procedures and indicate to parents a possible critical situation in time for resuscitation measures to be applied.
